Does anyone know if you can put Behlen's Rockhard varnish over Z poxy pore fill? I ask this because after three attempts at brushing KTM-9 and always rubbing through it in one little place on an otherwise great looking finish I sanded all the finish off two guitars and decided to go back to my usual varnish finish.
I have sanded the epoxy off the surface, just leaving it in the pores, and I'm thinking of a couple of light coats of shellac and then the varnish. I really like the Z poxy finishing resin as a pore filler and hope it will work under varnish. Anyone ever done this?

                Thanks, Paul Harrrell

Yes you can, I have done this and it worked just fine. I have used the varnish over zpoxy and schellac and both are great sealers for varnish.

John - Thanks for the reply. Did you sand the zpoxy off the surface or leave a thin layer as you would when using KTM-9?

I leave a thin layer so that the color will be uniform all over and the epoxy usually pops pretty grain like no other.

Paul, whether KTM9 Nito or varnish I would sand the zpoxy just barly back to the wood leaving the pores filled seal with two very light coats of shellac. then you should have no issues with any finish of choice. Many have success finishing directly over Zpoxy but I would seal it with shellac.

I've had no issues under KTM9, Target 9000, Shellac, Nitro or Urethane lacquer. I do scuff sand it with 320 first.
